Landmark events in the history of Qatar

 

1868 Signing a treaty with Britain on 12th September to confirm the leadership of Sheikh Mohammed Al Thani internally and internationally and constitute for the establishment of Qatar emirate under the leadership of Al Thani family.
1872 Building a fort for the Turks in Qatar.
1893 Defeating the Ottomans in al-Wajbah - a landmark event in the history of Qatar.
1913 A British-Ottoman agreement was signed on 17th July to end the Ottoman claims on Qatar and recognize the sovereignty of Qatar under the rule of Al Thani.
1915 All Turks leave Qatar.
1916 Signing the 1916 treaty to provide for the British protection for Qatar against land and sea attacks in return for Qatar taking a neutral stance in the First World War.
1928 Setting up the first Shari'a court in the country.
1930 Experiencing very difficult economic situation when the West suffered from recession and pearl trade slumped.
1933 The Japanese start the cultured pearl business, putting an end to the pearl diving profession in Qatar and the entire Arabian Gulf.
1935 Britain gains oil exploration concession in the country.
1940 The first oil well in Qatar, Dukhan 1, starts production.
1949 Exporting the first oil shipment to world markets.
1950 Forming the first nucleus for the government in Qatar by appointing a British financial advisor for the ruler.
1951 Drawing up the plan to establish a power generating station, a new hospital, drinking water grid and schools in the time of Sheikh Ali Bin Abdullah Al Thani.
1952 Signing the first agreement to give Shell Company the rights to offshore oil exploration.
1957 Introducing the portfolio of education.
1960 Introducing the portfolio of finance.
1961 Issuing the first law to set up an official gazette for the government of Qatar
1961 Issuing the first law on naturalization and relevant regulations.
1961 Joining OPEC organization.
1962 Issuing the supreme government administration law.
1963 Issuing the municipality organization law.
1964  - Issuing the law on the establishment of the Advisory Council.
1968  - Britain decides to pull out of the entire region.
1968  - Joining the negotiations on the 9-way union.
1969  - Issuing the law decree establishing the department of foreign affairs, which was directly affiliated to the government's headquarters and was the nucleus for the present ministry of foreign affairs.
1970  - Issuing the provisional basic statute for rule in the country.
1970  - Forming the first council of ministers in the history of Qatar.
1970  - Holding the first meeting of the 9-member council of ministers on 3"' July. Ministries included finance and petroleum, education, interior, justice, public health, public works, labor and social affairs, industry and agriculture, communications and transport and electricity and water.
1970  - Establishing the first criminal court in Qatar.
1971  - Proclaiming independence on 3'd September, joining the League of the Arab States and the United Nations and entering into a new era.
1972  - Sheikh Khalifa Bin Hamad Al Thani assumes power in Qatar and begins the stage of building the modern state.
1972  - Issuing the amended provisional basic statute for rule.
1972  - Forming the first advisory council.
1972  - Forming the first advisory council.
1974  - Establishing Qatar General Petroleum Corporation after nationalizing Qatar Shell Company.
1981  - Joining the GCC.
1995  - H.H. Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani accedes to power in Qatar. A new era of democratization begins and a permanent constitution and an elected parliament start to formulate.
1996  - Appointing H.H. Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani as heir apparent.
1996  - Appointing H.H. Sheikh Abdullah Bin Khalifa Al Thani as prime minister.
1996  - Issuing an Emiri decision amending some of the provisions of the amended provisional basic statute for rule in the State of Qatar.
1996  - Holding the first elections for the board of directors of Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
1997  - Amending some of the provisions of the amended provisional basic statute on the responsibilities of the heir apparent.
1998  - Appointing H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani as deputy prime minister.
1998  - Issuing a decree on the regulations of elections to the central municipal council.
1999  - Holding the first municipal elections.
2000  - Starting its 3-year term chairmanship of the Organization of the Islamic Organization.
2001  - Closing the 60 years old Qatari-Bahraini dispute by giving sovereignty to Bahrain over Hawar Archipelago and to Qatar over al-Zubara and surrounding territorial waters. 2002 - The Emir receives the final draft of the permanent constitution.
2002  - Issuing the law to establish a general prosecution authority.
2003  - Issuing the draft of the country's permanent constitution.
2003  - Holding the general reterendum on the permanent constitution.
2003  - Appointing the country's first woman catinet minister.
